Researcher Statement & Methodology
This workbook operates simultaneously as a public research repository, an ongoing archive of physical studio experiments, and an interactive portal documenting the exegesis for my Master of Professional Practice / Te Hono ki Toi degree.
Central Research Question
“How can deliberate interventions into the physical and algorithmic substrates of photography—through scanographic carriage friction, chemical abrasion, and binary displacement—deconstruct the ideology of transparency and establish an autonomous language of photographic abstraction?”
Methodological Triad
Chemigram & Chemical Erosion
Treating gelatin-silver emulsions not as passive recording surfaces, but as reactive sculptural matter. Employing localized resists (syrups, varnishes, wax) and alternating baths of alkaline developer and acidic fixer under daylight to produce self-generating chromatic topographies.
Scanographic Carriage Drag
Disrupting the motorized carriage of flatbed scanners through manual resistance, physical vibration, and optical refraction. Turning the scanner from a document-duplicating machine into a temporal recording apparatus that logs the corporeal struggle of the artist's body against the device.
Raw Data Corruption & Glitch Ontology
Direct hexadecimal manipulation and byte-stream corruption of uncompressed RAW files, followed by hybrid printing onto traditional Japanese washi and baryta papers. Bridging nineteenth-century chemical unpredictability with twenty-first-century algorithmic fragility.
